Sasha caught up with RIO as he passed through the studio to let us know what he’s been working so far in 2013, his Manny Youngers project and letting us know what to expect from him over the summer.
Listen Back to the interview below!
About RIO
Already considered the next big thing to break from outside of London, RIO learnt his trade on Manchester’s underground Grime scene with Moss Side Rap collective ‘Street Smart’ with his cousin T-Bizzle after releasing a series of mixtapes. Before long he formed ‘Hit Em Up Squad’ along with fellow emcee’s Wrigley (A-List)& Liquid, releasing four mixtapes in less than two years, RIO is no stranger to hard work.
Born and raised in Manchester’s Moss Side area, RIO has seen his city being talked about for all of the wrong reasons too many times. Having grown up around gang culture he’s seen how easy it is to fall into but since the birth of his son, it’s something he wants to fight to change. This was described most notably through his debut single ‘Narrow Roads’ produced by Bless Beats & Mos Wanted.
RIO has performed on the same bill as Artists such as GFresh, Skepta, Scorcher, Mz Bratt, Aggro Santos, Donaeo, Griminal plus more and supported artists like Rick Ross, Wiley, Labrinth and Nas in concert.
2013 has seen the release of ‘We love Grime Part 2′ and ‘Bottom to the Top 2′ which was released through SBTV and features some of Manchester’s finest: Misha B, Blizzard, Tyler Daly plus more.
Throughout his career RIO has shown unnerving drive and ambition coupled with the constant thirst for perfection continues to shine through in all their work to date. However, the charismatic jack-the-lad swagger that RIO holds makes it evident he’s having fun doing what he loves and what he does best.
Join Sasha, Monday 15th April from 1pm as RIO will be passing through Unity Radio HQ to tell us about the Manny Youngers team as well as what the summer has in store for him.
Sasha is on every Monday 1-2:30pm on Unity Radio 92.8FM.
